4/23/2004 11:25 AM
In Maryland, pollster Patrick Gonzales is surprised that Democrat John Kerry isn't farther ahead in such a solidly Democratic state. In New Hampshire, Republican Tom Rath is encouraged that President Bush has retained his footing in a state where he was pummeled relentlessly during the Democratic primaries. Appropriations Seat is Lure for Cooksey Louisiana Bid
4/7/2004 12:09 PM
Republican House leaders have offered former Rep. John Cooksey a seat on the powerful House Appropriations Committee in exchange for a successful run to reclaim his Louisiana seat. Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and Rep. Tom Reynolds (R-N.Y.), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), "are begging him to run" for the 5th District seat, said a source close to Cooksey. "They have promised him Appropriations," said the source. "He hasn't sought it." The Northeast Louisiana district, currently represented by conservative Democratic Rep. Rodney Alexander, has been targeted by the Republican political high command, which is looking to solidify the GOP's current majority in the House.
